You know and use these smart guides (rules) because of your screenwriting experience.

The business is the Protagonist, a character who has a 'voice' and a personality, goals, fears, etc.
The person telling you want they want is often (unsuspectingly) the Antagonist.
The Business (our Hero) wants to reach his True Love (their target market) but is often foiled by obstacles thrown in their path by the Antagonist.

You, the screenwriter/copywriter, know how to apply the Hero's voice, persona, and goals to get them what they want (which the think they know) and ALSO what they actually NEED (which they rarely really know.) IE: They "want" new clients; but they "need" to connect with people. A good scribe delivers both; in character, on time, with a twist.

Keep up the good work.

@Wendi - Don't worry. I'll protect you. Also, I'm stealing that last sentence for my new tagline.

Lizbeth - You're a doll. I know people who need this.

Ellen - I know, right? I want to be a patron. I don't argue with the client, though. I just write it like he wants it written. Tei is pronounced like the letter or the drink or the musical scale. Tee. It just looks cooler spelled the other way.

Sandie - Thanks, Sandie! Try to personify something really cool. Just for kicks. Like, if it's a flower shop, give it Dracula's voice. Way fun.

Great advice AND humor! I love your blog!

I especially like the tip about personification...I'm going to try that. Thanks!

Good one Tei. Telling everyone to get in "character." "Cause it really is about acting. I still want to be called a patron at the library though. I don't want to be a client. Actually I would like to be called a person who checks out books but that's too long.

How is Tei pronounced? Like tea or tie? Or tay? E

tsk tsk.....
Let me go clear the cobwebs out of my head, I think I was just in a bar, sitting on a bar stool, reading some remarkable, insightful copy on how to find the voice of my client, write like them and achieve their objectives better than they even knew they wanted when suddenly swearing broke out, some argument about being professional started, then wrestling... about the time the bar stool next to me was raised over my head I had to down my wine, duck out and run for cover.

Hanging out with rogues can be dangerous. If you survive, you might learn something.
